About us

Our work in the community

Queen Mary is a proud part of our local community, with a commitment to the area around us being in the roots of our institution.

Queen Mary began life in 1887 as the People’s Palace, a philanthropic organisation opened, according to Queen Victoria, “for the benefit of the people of east London”. We are proud of our heritage and remain committed to our roots in both the local area and local community.

On these pages you will find examples of just some of the work we do. For more information please visit our public engagement webpages or contact the relevant department below.

Community Services Directory

Our Community Services Directory lists a wide range of QMUL initiatives that provide opportunities and support to businesses, charities and people in our local neighbourhood of Tower Hamlets and wider East London.

Browse the list for a range of chances to get involved, from student placements to support local businesses and fundraising support to free legal advice and things to do for adults and children.
