Diversity Champion

  1. Background

One of the Royal Economic Society’s key strategic priorities for 2019-2023 is to improve diversity in economics. Through its Women's Committee, the Society has monitored and worked to improve the representation of women in UK economics over the last two decades. More recently, the Society has actively supported and promoted the Discover Economics campaign to improve diversity among undergraduate economics students and has also worked to improve the representation of state school pupils attending its Annual Lectures.

To help embed diversity more fully into its decision-making, the Royal Economic Society wishes to appoint a Diversity Champion, who will promote and monitor diversity across all the Society’s activities.

  1. Person specification

The RES Diversity Champion will be an economist based in the UK who has an active interest in diversity within the economics profession. Prior involvement with the Society’s activities is desirable.

  1. Job remit

The Diversity Champion will:

  • Promote and monitor diversity across all activities of the Society, including membership of the Society and its committees, selection of speakers and appointment of editors;
  • Advise RES Committees (including the Executive Committee and Council), as appropriate, on promoting diversity in activities and/or membership;
  • Work closely with the Communications and Engagement Committee and be an invited member of other RES working groups whose remits potentially involve diversity issues;
  • Act to alert the Trustee Board (RES Executive Committee) to any concerns about diversity in relation to the Society;
  • Have authority to seek information from the chairs of RES Committees and/or the RES office on any aspect relating to diversity;
  • Represent the RES externally in relation to diversity issues.

The RES Council has given approval for the RES Diversity Champion to be a member of the Executive Committee and a trustee for the Society. Term: Three years. The role is unpaid. Expenses will be reimbursed in line with the Society’s expenses policy. Administrative support will be provided by the RES office.

  1. Timeline
