Open-Ended
Maths Activities

Using 'good' questions to enhance mathematical learning

Open-Ended Maths Activities discusses the features of ‘good’ mathematical questions. It provides practical advice on how teachers can create their own open-ended and problem-solving questions, and use them effectively in the classroom.

Teachers recognise the importance of asking questions that promote higher-level thinking and encourage active engagement in learning. Posing open-ended, problem-solving questions can enhance learning, teaching and assessment. The 'good' questions offered in Open-Ended Maths Activities make a useful addition to effective teaching strategies.

Key features

  • Includes over 80 pages of ‘good’ questions for teachers to use in the classroom
  • Questions are organised into content areas (Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, Statistics and Probability)
  • The suggested age level of students for each question is indicated
  • Written by a well-established expert in the field of teaching and learning mathematics, and an experienced author with a primary teaching background.

Challenging Mathematical Tasks

Using challenging mathematical tasks to unlock student potential

Challenging Mathematical Tasks supports the idea that students learn best when they work on problems that they do not yet know how to solve. Peter Sullivan’s research shows that many students do not fear challenges in mathematics, but welcome them. And rather than having teachers instruct them, these students prefer to work out solutions for themselves.

While it is possible for everyone to learn mathematics, it takes concentration and effort over an extended period of time to build the connections between concepts, to understand the coherence of mathematical ideas and to be able to transfer learning to practical contexts and new topics. Challenging Mathematical Tasks encourages students to persist and succees in their learning.

Key features

  • Includes activities that allow for sustained thinking, decision-making and risk-taking by the students
  • Features a ‘Learning Focus’, ‘Key Mathematical Language’, ’Pedagogical Considerations’, ‘Enabling and Extending Prompts’ for each task, plus ‘Supplementary Tasks’ and ‘Possible Solutions’
  • Written by a well-established expert in the field of teaching and learning mathematics
  • Follows a set structure to help students approach and work through the tasks.

Primary Maths Handbook

The Primary Maths Handbook is the essential reference resource for students, teachers and parents.

It has been updated to include all the latest terminology and mathematical concepts covered in the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics.

Key features

  • Includes diagrams and worked examples
  • The Handbook section is divided into the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics strands of Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability
  • Mathematical concepts are explained in detail, with clear diagrams and illustrations to aid understanding
  • The Quick-Reference Dictionary is cross-referenced to the handbook section and includes simple language with terms defined through mathematical contexts.

Numicon

A multi-sensory and active approach to teaching mathematics

Mathematics involves thinking about abstract concepts, something that many students have difficulty with. Numicon’s multi-sensory approach uses concrete materials and focuses on action, imagery and conversation to support students to explore relationships between numbers, look for patterns and solve problems using real-life contexts.

Key features

  • Teaching Resource Handbooks contain an Implementation Guide and step-by-step activities for the whole class, groups, pairs and individuals.
  • Explorer Progress Book gives teachers the opportunity to assess and monitor individual student progress
  • Copymasters support the activites in the Teaching Resource Handbooks and contain short, simple instructions to support parental engagement with the activities.
  • Apparatus Packs encourage students to reason mathematically through the use of concrete objects and provide all the material you need for group or one-to-one learning.
