WordCamp Central https://central.wordcamp.org WordCamp is a conference that focuses on everything WordPress. Tue, 14 Jul 2020 15:55:23 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=5.5.1-alpha-48833 WordCamp Genève 2020 cancelled due to COVID-19 https://central.wordcamp.org/news/2020/07/14/wordcamp-geneve-2020-cancelled-due-to-covid-19/ Tue, 14 Jul 2020 15:55:23 +0000 https://central.wordcamp.org/?p=3126483 You are probably all well aware that the situation regarding the coronavirus pandemic is far from improving. The number of positive cases in Switzerland is rising again, and the measures imposed by the Swiss authorities – in particular social distancing – do not facilitate the organisation of public events.

Given the uncertainty of further developments of the situation and the sanitary measures already mentioned, the organising team of WordCamp Genève has decided to cancel the event in 2020. It seems a shame to hold a WordCamp with a reduced number of attendees and where everyone would be obliged to keep their distance. Furthermore, the WordPress Foundation insists that speakers must all be local at in-person gatherings organised during the current global health emergency.

For all these reasons, we regrettably have to cancel the WordCamp Genève 2020 that we had initially postponed from March to October, subject to a final decision in July. We are very sorry to disappoint you. Still, we prefer to wait for better days – in the course of 2021 if the health situation improves – to offer you a “real” WordCamp in a friendly atmosphere rather than a “restricted” event.

Purchased tickets and the amounts allocated by our sponsors will, of course, be refunded.

We thank you for your understanding and look forward to welcoming you in Geneva as soon as possible.

WordCamp Athens 2020 is Cancelled https://central.wordcamp.org/news/2020/07/14/wordcamp-athens-2020-is-cancelled/ https://central.wordcamp.org/news/2020/07/14/wordcamp-athens-2020-is-cancelled/#comments Tue, 14 Jul 2020 15:50:35 +0000 https://central.wordcamp.org/?p=3126447 Dear friends all over the world,

although Greece is one the safest destinations to visit we can not ignore the ongoing global spread of COVID-19. This fact has been the main reason which led our hard decision to cancel WordCamp Athens 2020.

The decision to cancel WCATH 2020 was made with our best intentions to protect public health and the safety of all the people involved in the organizing process of such a popular technical conference.

We prioritize safety and health more than anything else but we are also investing all of our energy to set new dates and new ways to meet and enjoy a WordCamp in Greece.

We would like to grab this opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to all our sponsors and speakers that had been one of the cornerstones for making WordCamp Athens so popular. We will be available to discuss the next steps regarding the next WordCamp in Greece.

The best is yet to come! We have set our hearts to bring the WordPress Greek Community together, so stay tuned for our next announcements.

Thank you for your support, patience, and understanding. We appreciate your willingness to adjust to the new terms of reality and conference organizing. As soon as conditions allow, we hope that soon we will have good news to share with you about WordCamp Athens 2021.

On behalf of the WordCamp Athens Organizing Team

WordCamp Bucharest 2020: Cancelled https://central.wordcamp.org/news/2020/06/25/wordcamp-bucharest-2020-cancelled/ Thu, 25 Jun 2020 23:32:36 +0000 https://central.wordcamp.org/?p=3103277 It is with a heavy heart that we have decided to CANCEL WordCamp Bucharest 2020 due to COVID-19 concerns and current restrictions.

We kept hoping that everything will come back to normal and we’ll be able to move the event to later in the year, but the current situation doesn’t allow for this to happen. We believe this to be the best decision at this time for the safety of our community.

Instead of moving the event online which did not seem to fit our 2020 WordCamp, we decided on refocusing our entire energy into creating a great 2021 edition. Keep an eye on https://2021.bucharest.wordcamp.org/ for updates.

If you have other concerns regarding the event, please contact us by email at wordcamp.bucharest@gmail.com

Until further notice, stay safe and keep washing your hands !
Thank you so much for your support and understanding!

Sending our best regards,
Cezar & Rodica

WordCamp Tulsa 2020 – Cancelled https://central.wordcamp.org/news/2020/06/25/wordcamp-tulsa-2020-cancelled/ Thu, 25 Jun 2020 23:09:44 +0000 https://central.wordcamp.org/?p=3118011 The WordCamp Tulsa 2020 Organizing team has decided to cancel an event for 2020. We are now shifting our sights to bringing our first WordCamp to Tulsa in the Spring of 2021.

We considered holding a virtual event but we felt that the true value of WordCamp is getting to rub elbows with our fellow WordPressers. We will continue to hold virtual Meetups for the time being and welcome you to join us.

We wish our community the best and we look forward to sharing our beautiful city with you next year.

WordCamp Torino 2020: cancelled https://central.wordcamp.org/news/2020/06/16/wordcamp-torino-2020-cancelled/ https://central.wordcamp.org/news/2020/06/16/wordcamp-torino-2020-cancelled/#comments Tue, 16 Jun 2020 04:38:14 +0000 https://central.wordcamp.org/?p=3116633 Sadly, we have decided to definitely cancel WordCamp Torino 2020.

We were waiting until now for a decision from our government, but at last, we decided to cancel the WCTRN 2020 edition.
The situation in Italy is getting better, but still, we are not permitted to organize events in person without guaranteeing the social distance (almost 1 mt between people).
Therefore, we don’t want to take the risk to organize an event without being sure we can make all people safe. It was a hard decision to make but is for the health and safety of all.
But, we are already planning to organize WordCamp Torino 2021 live!

And we’re preparing a great event online ;)

So, stay tuned and see you soon around online!

WordCamp Birmingham 2020 postponed to 2021 https://central.wordcamp.org/news/2020/05/25/wordcamp-birmingham-2020-postponed-to-2021/ https://central.wordcamp.org/news/2020/05/25/wordcamp-birmingham-2020-postponed-to-2021/#comments Mon, 25 May 2020 07:44:00 +0000 https://central.wordcamp.org/?p=3108177 From the beginning, WordCamp Birmingham has been a safe space for innovators, students and professionals. And while we often use “safe space” to describe free speech and inclusivity, this year has given the term a whole new meaning.

Due to the unprecedented scale of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have decided to postpone WordCamp Birmingham to February 2021. Though several camps have successfully converted to online formats, we do not feel a webinar series can effectively replace the in-person networking or quality standards for which we have become known.

That said, we encourage you to continue learning and creating. Visit WordCamp Central for a complete list of upcoming WordCamps, including WordCamp US on Oct. 27-29. And don’t forget to join us online for WordPress Birmingham meetups.

Be sure to check back regularly for updates. We look forward to seeing y’all next year.

So it brings me great joy to share some movement toward holding events instead of postponing and cancelling them.

The WordPress Community Deputies have put a lot of time and effort into a new set of resources, tools, and recommendations so that official events of the WordPress project can continue!

If you’ve been curious what we’re doing around online events or are looking to organize an online WordCamp check out this great resource over at the WordPress Community P2.

I hope to see you online at a WordCamp soon <3

WordCamp Asheville Cancelled https://central.wordcamp.org/news/2020/04/20/wordcamp-asheville-cancelled-for-2020/ https://central.wordcamp.org/news/2020/04/20/wordcamp-asheville-cancelled-for-2020/#comments Mon, 20 Apr 2020 20:34:45 +0000 https://central.wordcamp.org/?p=3098914 [EDIT 22 April 2020: Clarifying details about cancelling the in-person event, and the possibility of an online event. –@courtneypk]

The organizing team for WordCamp Asheville 2020 has made the sad but clear-cut decision to cancel our in-person event that was to be held July 17-19, 2020.

Like so many other camps during this time, the organizing team is considering the option of pivoting to organize a virtual event. The team will be making another announcement once this is decided upon.

We hold out hope for returning to the in-person conference format for WordCamp Asheville in 2021. For the time being, our working assumption is that we’ll be able to begin planning in time for our in-person event to occur around mid-July of 2021.

We had selected mid-July for our 2020 camp specifically to allow kids and parents the best chance at attending our first ever KidsCamp. Current indications are that we will reboot our KidsCamp effort next year, so please keep us in mind if this is applicable to you or someone you know.

We’d like to thank everyone who has been involved in our camp in any way over the years. As must be the case with organizing teams across the world, we will miss seeing all the smiling faces at camp this year. We’ll miss the networking, the learning, and the catching-up with friends. Even so, we know that cancelling the in-person event is the right call to make given the circumstances.

We hope everyone in the community fares well through the current quarantine conditions, and we’ll look forward to continuing with WordCamp Asheville’s in-person event in 2021.

WordCamp Grand Rapids 2020: Cancelled https://central.wordcamp.org/news/2020/04/20/wordcamp-grand-rapids-2020-cancelled/ Mon, 20 Apr 2020 20:34:42 +0000 https://central.wordcamp.org/?p=3098922 Due to the uncertainty around COVID-19, the coronavirus, we have made the difficult decision to cancel WordCamp Grand Rapids 2020.

Instead of moving the event online — which did not seem to fit our theme or goals for the 2020 camp — we are instead refocusing our energy into 2021 and continuing our history of quality camps. This decision gave us all a little space to breathe right now and focus on our families when they need us most while also continuing to support our local community.

If you are looking to connect with other WordPressers in the area, please go to WPGR.org and sign up for our Slack channel. We’re also continuing to hold our regular monthly meetups online until we can meet again in person. You can find information about that on the WPGR page as well as on Meetup.com

And until we can come together for WCGR 2021, keep your eyes on the list at WordCamp Central. A number of camps are meeting online and some are still planning in-person events later in the summer. Now is an excellent time to see what other camps are like and meet new people.

Thank you all for your understanding and we look forward to seeing you in 2021!!!

More than 35 organizers are working hard to create this unique event taking place from May 6th to May 9th. For 3 days, you will have access to two tracks with talks, workshops and case studies; dedicating our last day to the largest Contributor Day ever celebrated in Spanish and online.

The local spirit of WordCamp Spain is going to be shared with thousands of WordPressers from Latin America who have wanted to live it with us, by presenting talks and purchasing free tickets. We have consciously given a push to unite both sides of the pond thanks to this common interest: the growth of WordPress in Spanish.

We want to invite you to learn, share and enjoy with us during this event that fills with hopeful anticipation to our whole community.

We look forward to seeing you there!

WordCamp Boston 2020: Cancelled https://central.wordcamp.org/news/2020/04/01/wordcamp-boston-2020-cancelled/ Wed, 01 Apr 2020 21:55:11 +0000 https://central.wordcamp.org/?p=3098702

WordCamp Boston 2020 has been cancelled due to concerns and uncertainty related to the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic.

This decision was a very difficult one to make and was only made after monitoring all aspects of the global COVID-19 pandemic for several weeks. The decision can be boiled down to the answer to one question:

“Are we convinced that we can successfully plan and execute an inclusive, safe event for everyone that wishes to attend and meets the high standards for our event established over the last 10 years with the information that we have available to us at this time?”

Because we could not confidently answer yes to this question, the decision has been made to cancel.

The organizers will continue monitoring local, national, and international recommendations from the government, CDC, and other health experts. The idea of a larger scale Boston WordPress meetup event resembling a mini-WordCamp remains on the table should the pandemic be brought under control later this year and public gatherings are deemed safe.

We are also investigating ways that we could potentially host an online version of WordCamp Boston at some point this year.

This is an abbreviated version of the announcement post from the event’s own website which includes a breakdown of the organizing team’s thought process and all information that was used to make this decision. Please take the time to read the entire announcement.
