Our research

Our department is unusual in combining three major disciplines: economics, mathematics and statistics.

Our academics and PhD students conduct cutting edge research in four key areas - econometrics and statistical sciences, macroeconomics, microeconomics and mathematics - and exploit the synergies that arise from our overlapping interests and the informal engagement produced by physical co-location.

Our research benefits from existing research centres, Birkbeck Centre for Applied Macroeconomics and Centre for Finance and Commodities, that facilitate interactions with external academics, policymakers, our current and former PhD students.

Research centres and networks

Our academics, researchers and MPhil/PhD students work together via research centres, networks, groups and societies. These cut across departments, subjects and areas of expertise, to encourage and enable innovative, interdisciplinary research.
